The community team behind the Half-Life 2: VR Mod has released a major update, officially achieving Steam Frame verification. Owners of Half-Life 2 on Steam can now access the title on the hardware with specific performance optimizations and dedicated controller bindings.
Technical Improvements and Hardware Support
Achieving Steam Frame compatibility involved a multi-stage development process. Early attempts to run the project on the hardware faced performance issues, which have now been addressed through optimized frame timing and a careful selection of performance settings. Key technical additions include:
- Eye-tracked foveated rendering: Implemented to improve visual performance.
- DXVK updates: Updated to support more stable rendering.
- CPU Optimization: Targeted performance adjustments specifically for lower-end hardware configurations.
Gameplay and Stability Updates
Beyond hardware-specific compatibility, the update introduces several quality-of-life improvements for all players using the mod:
- Weapon Mechanics: A new sniper scope has been added for the crossbow, and the gravity gun now includes an optional weapon laser. Developers also added two-handed weapon stabilization.
- Visuals and UI: Loading screens are now correctly rendered in VR, and hand models remain visible while holding objects.
- Stability: The update resolves headset shaking on uneven terrain and fixes startup issues previously affecting the Half-Life 2 episodes on Linux.
The mod continues to require an existing Steam copy of Half-Life 2 to function. Users can access these updates immediately by updating the game through their Steam client.
