Grand Theft Auto VI will feature distinct relationship and criminal tracking systems that govern how protagonists Lucia and Jason interact, according to Rockstar co-head Rob Nelson.

Speaking in an interview with IGN, Nelson clarified that the game tracks what kind of criminal the player is separately from the romantic relationship system. Players manage the connection by having the characters spend time together in the open world, which includes slice-of-life activities like playing pool, mini-golf, kayaking, shopping, exercising, getting a haircut, or committing crimes such as robbing stores and banks.
The story begins at a point where Lucia and Jason are giving their relationship a shot, but simply playing through the main narrative is not enough to keep them romantically entwined. Players must actively maintain the bond by texting, asking to meet up, or spending leisure time together. Ignoring text messages from one another can have a negative impact on the relationship.
However, players who prefer not to focus on romance can choose to ignore the system. Nelson noted that the narrative forces the pair to stay together as partners in crime for most of the story due to their circumstances, but mechanisms exist for players to opt out of managing the personal relationship if they wish. Depending on how close the characters remain, the story may play out differently.
