In a recent interview with DenFamiNicoGamer, Beast of Reincarnation director Kota Furushima explained the creative reasoning behind the decision to leave the game's dual protagonists, Emma and Koo, unable to communicate through speech. While Game Freak is well-known for the Pokémon franchise, this upcoming 2026 action RPG takes a different approach to character interaction.

The Philosophy of Silence

Furushima emphasized that the lack of dialogue is a deliberate choice intended to shape the player's experience. According to the director, communicating without words provides a unique benefit that would be lost if the characters could simply speak to one another. "When you don't speak, you gain something else," Furushima noted. "We wanted the game to give you a certain feeling, and that wouldn't happen if talking had benefits over keeping quiet."

The development team believes that this creative constraint encourages players to fill in the gaps with their own imagination. By removing traditional dialogue, the developers aim to foster an experience where a bond between the man and the beast awakens "deep in your heart" as the story progresses.

Gameplay-Driven Partnerships

While Beast of Reincarnation features a more realistic aesthetic than previous Game Freak titles like Tembo the Badass Elephant or HarmoKnight, it remains grounded in the studio's expertise in building partnerships. Furushima stated that the studio has dedicated years to cultivating how players can develop relationships through mechanics rather than scripts.

To achieve this, the game introduces an affection system that emphasizes direct interaction. Players can engage with their companion through activities such as petting and washing the creature, ensuring that the bond is formed through active gameplay rather than narrative dialogue. Furushima maintains that while a relationship can develop through the plot, the team chose to prioritize gameplay as the primary vehicle for this connection.
