Square Enix's Creative Studio 3 has pulled back the curtain on Final Fantasy XIV Evercold, the upcoming 8.0 expansion set to launch in January 2027. Speaking at Final Fantasy 14 Fanfest Berlin 2026, Game Director Naoki Yoshida showcased major updates for the MMORPG, including our first look at the new tank job, structural changes to story progression, and a crossover raid series.
Quick Facts
- Expansion Release Date: January 2027
- Patch 7.56 Release Date: September 8
- New Job: Bastion (Main Tank, starts at level 90 in Evolved Mode)
- New Story Structure: Non-linear progression across three zones completed in any order
- Platforms: Multi-Platform
The Bastion Tank Job
Clad in the gear of the new class, Yoshida introduced the Bastion, a main tank class exclusive to Evolved Mode starting at level 90. Protected by dual shields called the Skyltborg, the job features a mechanism that flips the shields to alternate between a clawed melee mode and giant triple-barrelled cannons. Originating from Aerslaent in the Northern Empty, Bastions offer defensive and curative boons for both the wielder and allies.
The expansion's story takes the Warrior of Light and the Scions to a reflection known as The Fourth, exploring giant Realmships high above frozen wastes. These sky vessels include Naglfar (Realmship of Water) and Hringhorni (Realmship of Fire), which will feature field sizes equal to or larger than previous zones.
Non-Linear MSQ and Raid Changes
Rather than following a rigid two-way split at the start of progression, Evercold introduces a non-linear Main Scenario Quest structure. After a shared introduction, players can complete three zones and their associated dungeons in any order before the path reconverges. To support this variance, limited auto-balancing will be applied to specific missions and instances.
Square Enix is also addressing the gap between Normal and Savage raids by introducing a third eight-person raid difficulty tier positioned between them. Equivalent in difficulty to extreme trials, it will offer a stepping stone with gradual gear upgrades for the 85% of players who clear Normal content but typically skip the 14-20% completion rate of Savage.
Final Fantasy VII Crossover and Gold Saucer Updates
The eight-person raid series for Evercold will be titled 'Beyond the Lifestream,' bringing a Final Fantasy VII crossover to the MMO alongside FF7 Remake Director Naoki Hamaguchi. Ahead of that, an FF7-themed update hits the Gold Saucer on October 28, introducing a typing-based multiplayer minigame called Keybound Brawler with gear rewards styled after Barret and Tifa.
Customization and Quality-of-Life Upgrades
Evercold brings several player-requested customization options. Players will be able to independently set Au Ra horn styles from face shapes, and toggle off features like Lalafell and Viera nose shading and Miq'ote warpaint starting in patch 8.1. Additionally, new 'Character Action Skins' will let players earn and assign alternative animations for actions like teleportation without altering their DPS.
Duty Support updates will also overhaul the Chocobo companion system, allowing dungeon light parties using a pair of players and their Chocobos in patch 8.1, followed by a breeding system overhaul in patch 8.2.
