Final Fantasy 7 Revelation may launch without a traditional physical disc, though director Naoki Hamaguchi is actively working to secure some form of physical release for fans.
Speaking with GamesRadar, Hamaguchi addressed the current state of physical games and whether the upcoming RPG will receive a physical disc. Because the game is still almost a year away from release, Hamaguchi made no guarantees, but emphasized that physical media remains important to him.
“We’re still having internal discussions on what the exact SKU product lineup is going to be for Revelation,” Hamaguchi said. “So, I can’t say anything particularly definitive at this point in time. But I am working to make the arrangements to allow us to have some kind of physical edition.”
Platform Rules and Industry Shifts
According to Hamaguchi, first-party rules and regulations complicate physical production. Nintendo, for instance, enforces storage limits on media like game cartridges, requiring development teams to carefully consider format decisions for each platform.
“Each platform and first-party have their own specific rules and regulations that we need to take into account, and think about what format is actually going to be best for the game,” Hamaguchi noted. “I do hope that we'll be able to come up with something that is as close as possible as to what players and fans are going to want.”
Hamaguchi also joked that fans would “rip him to pieces” if the game lacks a physical edition following his comments. Personally, he values physical items as a way to commemorate games for community events and autographs, acknowledging that the broader industry trend leans toward downloadable games.
Platform Context and Release Timeline
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is scheduled to release simultaneously across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, and Nintendo Switch. The release arrives amid a broader industry shift away from physical media. Sony's strategy to end physical disc production for new PlayStation games begins in January 2028—nearly a year after Revelation's launch window. Meanwhile, other upcoming releases like Grand Theft Auto 6 have opted for digital-only disc formats or code-in-a-box solutions at launch.
