Square Enix has unveiled details for the upcoming Final Fantasy 14 expansion, Evercold. Announced during the latest fan festival, the update introduces significant gameplay additions, including a new job and a crossover event with Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

Quick Facts

  • New Job: Bastion, a main tank role utilizing dual shields, starting at level 90.
  • Raid Collaboration: Beyond the Lifestream, a three-tier raid series themed after Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
  • New Environments: Including the city of Fargarth and two skyships, Naglfar (Realmship of Water) and Hringhorni (Realmship of Fire).
  • System Changes: Implementation of auto content balancing, new character customization options, and the Evolved combat overhaul.

New Job and Raid Details

The Bastion job is designed as a main tank role. While it features a playstyle centered on using massive twin shields, the moveset will incorporate magitek elements as players progress. This job will be accessible starting at level 90.

For fans of Final Fantasy 7, the Beyond the Lifestream raid series will serve as the game's next major collaboration. The project is being developed with direct oversight from the Final Fantasy 7 Remake team, with Kazushige Nojima supervising the story and Tetsuya Nomura leading the art design. The content will consist of three full raid tiers, and players will be able to acquire outfits modeled after characters Barret and Tifa.

System and Combat Updates

Evercold will introduce several technical and systemic changes to Final Fantasy 14. The development team is testing a new quest structure that allows certain main story quests to be completed in any order, though this will not change the overall narrative outcome.

Progression will be managed via a new "auto content balancing" feature, which functions as a form of level scaling. Character creators will also receive updates, such as a color picker for eyes, hair, and skin tones. Additionally, a new combat system titled "Evolved" is scheduled for release. While this update will be available to players, the original combat system, "Reborn," will remain an option for those who prefer it. More information regarding the differences between the two systems will be provided in a future broadcast.
