Bit Bot Media and in-house studio Mecanimal Games have announced Final Boss: The Video Game, a hybrid action title based on the Image Comics series created by Tyler Kirkham. The game is slated for a PC release via Steam in Q4 2028.

Quick Facts

  • Platforms: PC (Steam)
  • Release Window: Q4 2028
  • Developer/Publisher: Bit Bot Media and Mecanimal Games
  • Genre: Hybrid pixel art side-scrolling beat 'em up / 3D fighting game
  • Multiplayer: Up to 4-player local couch co-op

A Genre-Blending Experience

The game aims to translate the DNA of classic arcade brawlers and fighting games into a single experience. According to the developers, the gameplay structure mirrors the progression of the comic series. Players traverse side-scrolling, pixel-art stages populated by hordes of enemies, but the action shifts into a 3D one-on-one fighting game format whenever a boss encounter begins.

“At its heart, Final Boss is about escalation,” said Bit Bot Media creative director Frank O’Connor. “What begins as a cooperative street fight gradually narrows into a personal showdown.”

Gameplay and Mechanics

Players can choose from four characters: Tommy, Rabak, Masked Vigilante, and Midnight Lily. The title supports solo play or local cooperative action for up to four players. During the 3D boss duels, teammates can be tagged into the fight, allowing for strategic combinations that utilize the precision of a fighting game within the chaos of an arcade-style brawler.

Each stage is designed to introduce new mechanics and abilities, which players must master to overcome the end-of-stage boss. The narrative will follow Tommy Brazen as he uncovers the truth behind his family legacy and his own developing powers, utilizing animated comic book sequences to bridge the gap between combat encounters.

The game’s aesthetic is built around a love for 1980s action cinema and arcade classics, featuring an original score by Celldweller.

Developer Perspective

Creator Tyler Kirkham noted that the source material was originally conceived with the feel of an arcade title in mind. “Working directly with Bit Bot allows us to translate that DNA into a video game that feels authentic to the comic while expanding the world in exciting new ways,” Kirkham said in a press release. Bit Bot Media co-owner Joshua Viola added that the studio is focusing on building the game around the existing themes of the comic rather than simply providing a standard adaptation.
