FromSoftware has released a surprise Elden Ring update, delivering patch 1.17 across PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Steam. The update arrives to prepare the critically acclaimed action-RPG for the release of the Tarnished Pack DLC and implement a massive wave of balance adjustments and bug fixes.

Quick Facts

  • Patch Version: App Ver. 1.17 / Regulation Ver. 1.17
  • Platforms: PC (Steam), PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S
  • Required Action: Apply the latest update before playing; required for online play.
  • DLC Integration: Adds support for the Tarnished Pack DLC launching on August 28, 2026.

Weapon Buffs and Balance Changes

Patch 1.17 focuses heavily on buffs across various weapons and playstyles in both PvE and PvP. Perfume bottles—including Firespark, Lightning, Chilling, Frenzyflame, and Deadly Poison—have received increased attack power. Meanwhile, throwing attacks for the Smithscript Axe, Smithscript Spear, and Spear of the Impaler now benefit from reduced stamina consumption and increased power.

Shields have also received notable adjustments, with numerous options such as the Lordsworn's Shield, Briar Greatshield, and Spiked Palisade Shield receiving increased guard boost and reduced weight. Carian Sorcery Sword intelligence scaling has been altered to increase attack power for all damage types, and critical hit power was increased for the Smithscript Dagger and Rellana's Twin Blades.

The update implements a few targeted nerfs as well. Rakshasa's Great Katana now has an increased recovery time after attacking with a left-hand weapon, and suffers increased damage from other players during attacks in PvP. Additionally, the Gravitational Missile spell's projectile no longer explodes immediately upon hitting terrain.

Parry and Combat Adjustments

Mechanically, parries across the board have been improved. When using Daggers, Curved Swords, or Small Shields post-parry, the time before various actions can be performed has been reduced. Storm Wall and Thops's Barrier also received parry performance improvements, with Storm Wall additionally dropping its FP consumption to zero.

What Players Need to Do

Players must download and apply patch 1.17 before playing. The update is mandatory for online matchmaking. For those purchasing the Tarnished Pack DLC, the content unlocks starting August 28, 2026, depending on the platform and local time zone. The download also includes minor bug fixes, such as keyboard and mouse camera control corrections on PC.
