Cyan Worlds has provided a rare look at Project Anglerfish, a prototype for a previously unannounced game set in the Myst universe. While the project is no longer in active development and will not be released in its current form, the studio shared a teaser trailer to highlight the work produced by their team.

Quick Facts

  • Project Status: Cancelled; no longer in active development.
  • Development Timeline: The prototype was developed over a four-month period.
  • Developer: Cyan Worlds.
  • Recent Studio Changes: Cyan Worlds laid off 12 employees in March 2025, effectively reducing its staff size by half.

Creative director Eric Anderson introduced the footage, clarifying that the trailer was originally created solely for potential publishers. Development director Hannah Gamiel noted that while the game could not proceed, the studio remains proud of the prototype's creative direction.

The teaser footage depicts a character in a green cardigan interacting with a guildsman in a mansion. The scene centers on the retrieval of a book, escalating from standard exploration to supernatural occurrences, including structural damage and anomalous, tentacle-like growths. The narrative tone shifts significantly toward the end, with the primary character becoming increasingly erratic regarding the dangers associated with the book and the various "ages" mentioned in the dialogue.

Following the cancellation and the staff reductions implemented last year, Cyan Worlds has indicated that their primary focus remains on securing financing for future projects. Anderson confirmed that the team is still actively developing new games and experiences within the Myst universe and intends to share further information as those projects progress.
