Rebel Wolves' upcoming vampire RPG Blood of Dawnwalker features a directional combat system inspired by an unlikely source: Guitar Hero. According to game director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, speaking with Edge Magazine issue #427, learning the game's optional parry timing parallels mastering finger movements on a guitar peripheral.

How the Directional Combat Works

The optional combat mechanic flashes directional markers on the screen during enemy attacks. Players must match these prompts with correlated thumbstick movements at the exact moment to block incoming strikes without consuming stamina. Perfect timing triggers a direct parry.

While the mechanic shares similarities with directional input systems found in games like Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Chivalry, and For Honor, Blood of Dawnwalker explicitly signals the correct direction via on-screen UI prompts. For players who prefer a cleaner screen and want to rely entirely on enemy animations, the UI indicators can be turned off completely.

Tomaszkiewicz noted that once players adjust to the pace, the directional flow feels natural enough that most people will choose to play using the system when the game arrives on PC this September.
