The user's brain generates unique EEG signals in response to these flashes, which are then detected by the headset and translated into controller inputs.

According to exhibit staff, the system requires approximately five minutes of calibration for each player. Beyond gaming, the press release for the exhibit noted that this technology is currently being explored for medical applications, including anesthesia monitoring, early warning systems for epileptic seizures, and sleep-related research.

Latency and Accessibility

The practical application of BCI technology in gaming faces challenges, primarily regarding latency. While the ability to play complex action titles via thought has been demonstrated—notably by streamer PerriKaryal, who successfully defeated the boss Linguxi in Black Myth: Wukong—the technology remains in its infancy. Other hardware demonstrated at the event, such as BrainCo's EEG headset for robotic limb control, reported a signal processing time of under 200 milliseconds, though the impact of such latency on fast-paced gameplay remains a significant hurdle.

While the technology offers a potential path for gamers with restricted mobility or physical disabilities to engage with titles like Black Myth: Wukong, there are concerns regarding the flashing visual targets used in the SSVEP method.
