Panache Digital has provided new details on the ability system for 1666: Amsterdam, the upcoming PC title from former Assassin's Creed creator Patrice Désilets. The game features a randomized perk system tied to "coffer" jewelry boxes found in homes throughout the city.
The Coffer Lottery System
Players discover abilities by opening coffers, a process that requires navigating environments with the help of a feline companion named Aaron. Upon opening a coffer, players are presented with three distinct symbols. Because these symbols are not immediately readable, the game relies on a framing device involving a modern-day character named Clio, who deciphers the book containing the narrative to hypothesize what the protagonist, Noa, has discovered.
Désilets confirmed that this system functions as a "lottery," forcing players to adapt to a new set of abilities each time they fail a mission. "Each time you lose, and you have to restart, you will have a different set of abilities with which to play the mission," Désilets explained. While there is currently no cap on how many abilities a player can equip if they avoid death entirely, the death-reset mechanic ensures that builds are temporary and subject to change.
Confirmed Gameplay Perks
The developer showcased two primary examples of these abilities during a recent demo:
- Kinesia: An ability that allows for faster flight over water, powered by destroying objects in the environment.
- Travel: An ability that enables high-altitude movement above the rooftops of Amsterdam, described as similar to parkour mechanics.
1666: Amsterdam is scheduled to launch on August 25, 2026.
