With the Nintendo Switch 2 arriving later this year, Nintendo has confirmed the inevitable end of the road for its current console generation. While the company plans to keep the original hardware in production throughout 2026, the era of the classic handheld is officially coming to a close.
According to a recent blog post, Nintendo intends to keep the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, and Nintendo Switch OLED models widely available across Europe for the remainder of 2026. However, the company has set a firm cutoff date for mid-February 2027, at which point these devices will no longer be available for purchase. By that time, the original Switch will have been on the market for nearly a decade.
Switch 2 Upgrades and Battery Revisions
As the older models head toward retirement, the Nintendo Switch 2 is introducing hardware adjustments designed to comply with new European battery regulations. The upcoming console will feature a removable battery, marking a shift from the sealed designs of the past. This revision results in a minor capacity adjustment, moving from 5220mAh to 5172mAh—a roughly 1% change.
This design philosophy extends to the controller ecosystem as well. A fresh wave of Joy-Cons is planned to support removable batteries, allowing players to swap them out as needed. Nintendo also confirmed that revisions for the Nintendo 64 and GameCube controllers are in the works, though these are not slated for release until early 2027.
Reflecting on a Decade of Gaming
The original Switch launch remains a significant chapter in gaming history. Despite trailing behind the raw power of contemporaries like the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, the console established itself through its unique form factor and a library that defined its generation. Whether you spent years playing Fortnite or exploring the massive catalog of Nintendo titles, the device leaves behind a substantial footprint as it prepares to exit the stage.
For those looking to make the most of the current ecosystem, Nintendo continues to focus on its library of games. Players can still find plenty of value in the current best Switch games before the transition to the new hardware fully takes hold.
