Since the launch of Nintendo's latest console, players have asked whether Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 will make the jump to the platform. While studio leadership has previously indicated a willingness to explore the idea, developer Sandfall Interactive has detailed the technical hurdles standing in the way of a Nintendo Switch 2 version.

Technical Challenges on Nintendo Switch 2

Speaking in an interview with Automaton, Sandfall Interactive chief technical officer and lead programmer Tom Guillermin outlined the realities of targeting Nintendo's hardware with an Unreal Engine 5 project.

"It's a big technical challenge because we tried to do something beautiful with the game, but of course, the Switch 2 is not as powerful as the PlayStation or the Xbox Series X," Guillermin said. He added that a port is an important consideration, particularly given the modest size of the studio, and noted that many standard Unreal Engine 5 features do not currently work on the Switch 2.

Lead character artist Alan Reynaud added that Epic Games is introducing features like Lumen Lite—which runs more efficiently than standard Lumen—but noted that these updates take time to roll out. The team must evaluate these engine updates to decide on their next steps.

Release Timing Remains Unconfirmed

When asked about a potential release window for a Nintendo Switch 2 edition, Sandfall Interactive CEO and creative director Guillaume Broche stated that no timeframe has been set. While the studio is interested in finding a way to make the port happen, Broche confirmed that it is still too early to announce anything definitive.

Creating the original game was a massive undertaking for the independent developer, which operated with a core team of around 30 people alongside outsourced support. Following its rapid commercial milestone of selling one million copies in just three days, the team is deliberately taking its time as it evaluates hardware feasibility.
