As Sonic the Hedgehog celebrates its 35th anniversary in 2026, Sega Chief Creative Officer Takashi Iizuka has provided insight into the franchise's direction and the challenges of balancing its expansive history with future development. Iizuka, who joined Sega in 1992, emphasized that the team's primary focus remains on delivering new experiences rather than revisiting legacy titles.
The Stance on Remakes and Remasters
Addressing frequent fan requests for remasters of titles like Sonic Heroes or Sonic Unleashed, Iizuka explained that proper remakes require a total rethink of core mechanics. According to Iizuka, updating controls, level design, and technology to meet modern expectations often demands as much time and resource as developing an entirely new project. Consequently, his current priority is using company resources to build new Sonic games.
Potential for New Genres
While the series has branched into racing, puzzle, and platforming titles, Iizuka expressed interest in exploring new genres, provided the concepts remain authentic to the character's core pillars of speed and freedom. He specifically addressed the possibility of a role-playing game, noting that the size of the current Sonic cast makes a party-based adventure a logical fit, though he confirmed no such project is currently in development.
Maintaining Continuity
Iizuka highlighted the ongoing effort to connect different expressions of the franchise, including games and comics. By working with writers familiar with the wider canon, such as Ian Flynn, the team aims to strengthen character continuity across various media. Regarding the 35th anniversary, Iizuka confirmed that fans can expect continued announcements throughout the year across games, music, and merchandise, intended to celebrate every era of the franchise's history.
