If you have been looking for a farm sim with a bit more bite, Moonlight Peaks is exactly what you need. It manages to refresh a crowded genre with its gothic charm and supernatural flair, earning an 8/10 in our review. Whether you are a fan of Stardew Valley or just love a good cryptid-filled story, this title offers a compelling, cozy experience that feels right at home on the Nintendo Switch 2.
Life as Dracula’s Child
You start the game as the child of Dracula, having run away from home to start your own life. You are left with little money, an overgrown farm, and a Hellkitten companion. The town itself is full of life—or perhaps, un-life. You will encounter an alcoholic vampire named Orlock, a werewolf mayor, and a mysterious girl with a bag on her head. The setting is deeply immersive, leaning into the spooky-cozy aesthetic that makes exploring the town and getting to know the locals so satisfying.
Farming with a Supernatural Twist
At its core, Moonlight Peaks follows the classic farming formula: plant crops, raise them, and sell them for profit. However, the game adds inventive mechanics to keep things fresh. You can enchant your watering cans to automate tasks, or use magical spells to boost your mining, collecting, and crop growth abilities. Beyond the farm, you can fish, catch bugs, make pottery, or track down 100 "Vampsters" hiding in the mines. There is even a side quest from Death himself, tasking you with capturing 100 soul-bound spirits.
Performance and Potential Stumbles
On the Nintendo Switch 2, the game runs beautifully. We experienced no crashes, frame rate drops, or performance hiccups, making it one of the better-running titles on the new hardware. However, the game isn't without minor frustrations. Stamina management can feel punishing, as common actions like bug-catching drain your energy quickly, and food is often too expensive or too valuable to eat yourself. Additionally, while the random cutscenes and "mini-movies" with town characters are charming, they can sometimes make it difficult to figure out exactly how to progress the main story.
Despite these small hurdles, the sheer variety of activities—from bouquet making to the deep social system—ensures there is always something to do. With potential for future updates or DLC, it is a game that easily justifies the time spent wandering its dark, tree-filled streets.
- Charming gothic aesthetic and cast
- Smooth performance on Switch 2
- Inventive magical farming tools
- Stamina system can feel restrictive
- Main story progression lacks clear direction
