Nintendo revealed this week that the mobile spinoff Mario Kart Tour is reaching the end of its life. With service ending this September, players are facing the reality that the title will likely become entirely unplayable, as Nintendo has not announced an offline mode for the game.

While the game has shared plenty of content with the console entries—most notably Mario Kart 8 Deluxe—the upcoming shutdown brings a permanent loss for the series. One specific track, Piranha Plant Pipeline, was never ported to the console version, meaning it will cease to exist once the mobile servers go dark.

The End of Piranha Plant Pipeline

As noted by NSuperGamerGuy, Piranha Plant Pipeline is a unique case in the franchise. Despite the success of the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass, which integrated many mobile-exclusive tracks, Piranha Plant Pipeline was left behind. The track was not added to Tour until 2022, likely missing the development window for the Booster Pass, which was already well underway or finalized by that time.

It is important to distinguish this track from similarly named courses like Piranha Plant Slide or Piranha Plant Cove, both of which remain playable in other titles. Because Piranha Plant Pipeline is exclusive to Mario Kart Tour, its removal from active service effectively turns it into lost media.

A Warning for Digital Ownership

The shuttering of Mario Kart Tour follows a similar announcement from Square Enix, which confirmed that the Final Fantasy 7 mobile spinoff, Ever Crisis, is also ending service. These closures highlight the precarious nature of mobile gaming, where entire titles and their unique assets can disappear on a whim.

While there is a slim possibility that the track could appear in a future expansion for Mario Kart World, there has been no official word from Nintendo regarding such plans. For now, the loss of Piranha Plant Pipeline serves as a stark example of how digital-only releases can lead to the permanent removal of content, regardless of whether a player invested time or money into the experience.
