Naoki Yoshida Warns That Future Final Fantasy Remakes Require Large Scope

Fans hoping for high-fidelity remakes of classic titles like Final Fantasy 6 may face a long wait, according to Final Fantasy 14 director Naoki 'Yoshi-P' Yoshida. Speaking at Fan Fest Berlin alongside Final Fantasy 7 Remake lead Naoki Hamaguchi, Yoshida cautioned that the sheer scale of earlier entries in the series makes a modern remake a massive undertaking.

The Challenge of Scale

Yoshida highlighted Final Fantasy 6 as a prime example of the development hurdles involved. The original SNES title managed to pack 14 playable characters, a world map that evolves throughout the story, and numerous combat encounters onto a single cartridge. Replicating that content with the production values seen in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth would be a significant challenge.

"Of course I understand the feelings of the players, but you gotta think about it," Yoshida said. "Look at Final Fantasy 6, it's such an incredibly huge game. The scale is just immense."

Potential Multi-Part Releases

Yoshida added that this complexity applies to other legacy titles such as Final Fantasy 8 and Final Fantasy 9. He suggested that if Square Enix were to pursue remakes for these games in the same style as the current Final Fantasy 7 series, they would likely need to be split into multiple parts—potentially four or five—to account for the volume of content.

Future Directions for Remakes

The conversation also touched on the logistical realities of such projects. Naoki Hamaguchi noted that the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy benefited from a dedicated team that stayed together across three back-to-back projects, a rare occurrence that isn't easily replicated for other titles. Hamaguchi suggested that a hypothetical Final Fantasy 6 project might be better suited for another creator.

Square Enix is exploring different approaches to its back catalog, such as the upcoming Final Fantasy Resonance. Unlike the expansive 3D world of the Final Fantasy 7 remakes, Resonance is set to utilize a pixel art style with turn-based combat, similar to the Octopath Traveler series.
