Kingdom Hearts 4 will feature the most detailed environments in the franchise's history, but that design choice comes with a trade-off: players will explore fewer total worlds than they are accustomed to in past entries.
Speaking in a Famitsu interview following recent D23 reveals, director Tetsuya Nomura explained that advanced hardware and the ambitious scale of the sequel require significantly more development resources per location. "This game features the most detailed worlds we’ve ever created. That’s why the total number of worlds isn’t very large," Nomura stated.
What the World Count Means for Gameplay
Historically, mainline Kingdom Hearts titles feature roughly 13 to 15 distinct worlds. While Square Enix has not specified the exact world count for Kingdom Hearts 4, Nomura indicated that players will spend more time inside each individual location. The newly revealed Coco world, for instance, was shown in only a small snippet during recent presentations, suggesting substantial depth within each setting.
Furthermore, the reduced world count does not signal a shorter overall experience. Nomura confirmed that the script for Kingdom Hearts 4 is twice as long as the script for Kingdom Hearts 3, pointing to an extensive narrative driving the next installment.
Reveal Timeline and What Comes Next
Following the D23 weekend—which provided a first look at the Coco world alongside the previously shown Quadratum—fans waiting for steady world reveals should expect a pause. Nomura noted that pacing information is a priority to avoid exhausting reveals too far ahead of launch, admitting there may be a noticeable gap before the next location is shown.
