Josh Sawyer is reportedly directing the upcoming Fallout game currently in development at Obsidian Entertainment, according to a recent report. While Obsidian and Microsoft have not provided a release date or specific project details, the news connects the Fallout: New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity director to the studio's return to the franchise.

Design Philosophy and Player Choice

Though the project remains early in its lifecycle, recent comments from Sawyer in an interview with The Examined Game offer a glimpse into his approach to role-playing mechanics. Sawyer highlighted that he believes RPGs are most effective when players cannot exert total control over every situation.

Drawing on his experience with Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, Sawyer explained that he intentionally limited the player's ability to defeat the god-like entity Eothas. By signaling that the antagonist was beyond the player's physical power, he aimed to move away from the common RPG trope where the protagonist can resolve every conflict through force or persuasion.

"So many problems are just human problems," Sawyer said during the interview. "Even in a fantastic world, there are still going to be powers that are beyond you. There are things that you can’t overwhelm."

The Impact of Imperfect Decisions

Sawyer noted that his goal is often to force players to reconcile with "imperfect" outcomes. He pointed to his work on Pentiment, where players must make accusations of murder without having full certainty of the culprit. This forces the player to interrogate their own values—weighing whether they care more about condemning the person they think is guilty, someone they dislike, or someone who would be least missed by the community.

By removing the ability to "solve" every scenario, Sawyer aims to create moments of genuine tension and agony. While these design choices have received mixed reactions in his previous titles, he maintains that they prevent the narrative from feeling devoid of meaning.

Source Reliability

This report regarding Sawyer’s involvement originates from a single source and has been categorized with a confidence rating of 68/100. While the industry is aware that Obsidian is working on a new Fallout title, specific details regarding the project's scope, timeline, and the director's involvement are subject to change as development continues.
