Following months of speculation regarding the cost of Grand Theft Auto VI, Take-Two Interactive has confirmed the title will retail for $80. This pricing, which aligns with the cost strategy seen during the Nintendo Switch 2 launch, has sparked discussion among investors regarding the company's long-term software pricing model.

Take-Two’s Stance on Pricing

During a recent investor Q&A, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick addressed concerns that $80 might become the new standard for the publisher's releases. Zelnick clarified that the decision for GTA 6 was specific to the title, noting that other upcoming releases, such as NBA 2K27, will launch at the standard $70 price.

"Our goal is to deliver way more value to consumers than what we charge them," Zelnick said. He argued that the "real cost" of a AAA video game is lower today than it was 20 years ago. According to Zelnick, the decision to price GTA 6 at $80 was made with the expectation that Rockstar Games would "over-deliver" on the experience, citing the longevity of GTA Online as an example of sustained engagement.

Value and Engagement

Zelnick emphasized that the company's primary focus remains on user engagement rather than maximizing the base price of a game. While analysts have projected that GTA 6 could generate up to $5 billion in its first week, Zelnick noted that the company is not taking pre-order success for granted. "One thing we certainly don't do is take a victory lap before we run the event," he added, acknowledging that pre-orders can be canceled.
