Rockstar Games has introduced a new combat mechanic for Grand Theft Auto 6 that allows players to attempt criminal activities without resorting to lethal force. During recent demonstrations following the game's latest gameplay reveal, developers confirmed that players will be able to use suppressive fire to manage encounters with police and civilians.
New Non-Lethal Options
According to Rob Nelson, head of development and co-studio head at Rockstar Games, the team wanted to provide alternatives to standard gunfights. When confronting the law or civilians, players can now choose to fire near their targets rather than aiming directly at them. This action serves to startle or confuse opponents, creating a window for players to escape.
This mechanic is intended to align with the narrative of protagonists Jason and Lucia, who are attempting to evade the law. Nelson noted that engaging in prolonged shootouts is not always the most logical choice for the characters when they aren't fully cornered.
Criminal Reputation and Consequences
The game tracks player actions through a criminal profile system that evolves over time. Your reputation in the game world—ranging from a “psycho killer” to a “refined thief”—will shift based on how you handle confrontations. While players are still free to engage in lethal combat, doing so will impact their reputation. Additionally, the developers have noted that police AI in Grand Theft Auto 6 is significantly more challenging than in previous entries, making non-lethal evasion a potentially strategic choice.
Quick Facts

- Criminal Profile: The game tracks your actions, with the world reacting differently to your reputation as a "psycho killer" or a "refined thief."
- Environmental Interaction: Gameplay footage has shown players disabling police vehicles, such as shooting out tires, to escape without killing officers.
- NPC Behavior: If players are spotted with a visible weapon while entering a store, NPCs may call the police before a crime is even committed.
