Following the closure of E3, Gamescom is officially the biggest gaming event in the world. As the event prepares for its 2026 iteration in Cologne, Germany, organizers have outlined what is next for the massive trade show, including structural additions and future expansion plans.

- GDQ Dates: August 28–30, 2026 (three-day speedrunning event supporting Gaming for Democracy).
- North American Expansion: Confirmed to not be part of future plans by the German Games Industry Association.
- Confirmed Game Appearances: Includes titles such as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Songs of the Past, Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen, The Blood of Dawnwalker, Alien: Isolation 2, Fable, Star Wars: Galactic Racer, and Metro 2039.
Event Evolution and GDQ Partnership
Gamescom director Tim Endres at Koelnmesse noted that the event's continuous growth in scale, international reach, and digital footprint stems from long-term development. Formats like Gamescom Opening Night Live, the Gamescom Awesome Indies Show, and global editions such as Gamescom Asia x Thailand Game Show and Gamescom LATAM have shaped its current standing.
For the 2026 event, Stefan Heikhaus of the German Games Industry Association highlighted a strong responsibility to deliver for the community through visitor feedback. New additions for 2026 include a closer integration of the developer conference, further development of the indie showcase, a stronger focus on community formats via the social stage, and the inclusion of Games Done Quick.
First In-Person GDQ Outside North America
Games Done Quick's appearance at Gamescom 2026 marks a major milestone: the first-ever in-person GDQ event held outside of North America. The activation features three straight days of live speedrunning from August 28–30, broadcast on Twitch and YouTube alongside a charity initiative supporting Gaming for Democracy.
Future Expansion Plans
Regarding future physical expansions for Gamescom itself, Heikhaus confirmed that organizers have no intentions of bringing the event to North America. Instead, the strategy remains centered on Cologne as the primary meeting point for the global industry and community, supplemented by digital formats and existing international editions in Latin America and Asia.
