In Magic: The Gathering, few mechanics carry as much weight as Eminence. It grants your Commander the ability to influence the game state even while sitting in the Command Zone. Because of its inherent power, Wizards of the Coast has limited the mechanic to just five official cards throughout the game's history. While other cards like Heroes in a Half Shell were originally designed with the mechanic, they were ultimately stripped of it before release.
The Official Eminence Commanders
Each of these commanders provides value without ever needing to hit the battlefield, though they remain potent once they do.
5. Arahbo, Roar of the World
Arahbo is the go-to for Cat-themed decks. At the start of your combat, it grants another Cat you control +3/+3, regardless of whether Arahbo is in the Command Zone or on the battlefield. When it is in play, you can spend three mana to turn a Cat into an even larger threat, making it a versatile choice for both go-wide and go-tall strategies.
4. Inalla, Archmage Ritualist
Focusing on Wizards, Inalla rewards you for casting your creatures by allowing you to pay one generic mana to create a hasty copy of any nontoken Wizard that enters the battlefield. Once you have a board presence, you can tap five Wizards to deal five life to an opponent, providing a powerful finisher to break stalemates.
3. Sidar Jabari of Zhalfir
This Knight commander keeps your engine running by letting you draw and discard a card whenever you attack with one or more Knights. Once Sidar is on the board, he brings those discarded Knights back to the battlefield when he deals combat damage, turning your graveyard into a secondary resource.
2. Edgar Markov
Edgar Markov is the premier Vampire commander. Every time you cast a Vampire spell, you create a 1/1 Vampire token, effectively giving you a two-for-one value on every creature. Because the token is created even if your spell is countered, it is incredibly difficult to stop his momentum. Furthermore, he buffs your entire team with +1/+1 counters whenever he attacks.
1. The Ur-Dragon
The Ur-Dragon remains the most feared Eminence commander. While in the Command Zone or on the battlefield, it reduces the cost of all Dragon spells by one generic mana. Once it hits the board, attacking with Dragons lets you draw a card for each attacker and drop a permanent from your hand into play, often ending the game shortly after it arrives.
Honorable Mention: Oloro, Ageless Ascetic
While Oloro lacks the formal "Eminence" keyword—it was printed in the 2013 Commander series, four years before the mechanic existed—it functions identically. If Oloro is in your Command Zone, you gain two life at the beginning of your upkeep. This effectively enables "pillow fort" strategies that slowly drain opponents' life totals while keeping you safe.
