Don't Nod Announces "Transformation Initiative"
French game developer and publisher Don't Nod, the studio behind popular titles such as the Life is Strange series, VampyrJusantand its most recent release, Aphelionhas revealed plans for a "transformation initiative." The company stated in a press release that this program is a response to "profound changes in the economic conditions of the video game industry and its funding," alongside a "deterioration in the Group's key economic indicators."
The announcement indicates that Don't Nod believes it is necessary to adapt its operational model to these challenging circumstances. As part of this process, management has convened the Company’s Employee Representative Bodies for a meeting scheduled for Thursday, September 3, 2026. This initial meeting is part of an information and consultation procedure with the Social and Economic Committee (CSE), which precedes the potential implementation of a job-preservation plan. Concurrently, the company's management has begun negotiations with the trade union representing its employees.
Following the Board of Directors' meeting and the session with the Employee Representative Bodies, Don't Nod plans to disclose the key elements and subsequent steps of its transformation plan to the market on September 3, 2026, after the close of trading, in accordance with its regulatory obligations.
This is not the first instance of Don't Nod facing significant restructuring. Approximately a year ago, the studio implemented layoffs at its Montreal office in Canada. The current development follows a revelation in June that the company was nearing a critical financial state. This financial strain appears to stem from what has been described as a disappointing commercial performance for its space-based action-adventure game, Aphelionwhich launched in April.
Aphelionwhich is available on Game Pass, features a narrative where two astronauts are hunted across a planet named Persephone, each offering distinct gameplay experiences to the player. The game received middling scores on Metacritic. The studio has also reportedly scaled back its plans for Project P14, an unreleased game currently in development. The practical player impact of these changes could mean shifts in the scope, frequency, or even the continuation of future game development from Don't Nod, potentially affecting the types of experiences fans have come to expect from the studio.
