During the 2026 Safari Week event, a shiny hunter known as Professor Rex unveiled an extreme setup designed to target a specific, highly elusive Pokemon. The rig synchronizes 58 individual Nintendo consoles—25 Wii systems and 33 Nintendo GameCubes—to search for a level 25 Shiny Golduck in Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire.
The 58-Console Setup
To maximize efficiency, Rex configured the 58 consoles to respond to inputs from a single controller. This allows the user to trigger encounters across every system at the same time. The hunt is focused exclusively on the northwestern area of the Safari Zone, where the player surfs to trigger encounters.
Why This Hunt Is Unique
The hunt targets a specific set of parameters that significantly lowers the odds of success:
- The Level Target: Psyduck typically evolves into Golduck at level 33. However, the Safari Zone can generate wild Golduck starting at level 25. Rex is specifically hunting for these underleveled specimens, which he calculates as a one-in-nine-million encounter.
- The Safari Zone Mechanic: Unlike standard wild encounters, Safari Zone Pokemon have a high chance of fleeing. A failed catch attempt can result in the Pokemon escaping, meaning even a successful encounter does not guarantee a capture.
- Catch Odds: A standard Safari Ball has an approximately 12.33% chance to catch a Golduck, complicating the process further.
Progress and Results
The 2026 Safari Week event runs from July 17 through July 26. During the first eight hours of operation, Rex reported that the 58-console rig generated 31,000 encounters. While the team successfully found a Shiny Psyduck, the target level 25 Shiny Golduck has not yet appeared. The ongoing stream has also raised $200 for Starlight Canada.
