NetEase Games has pulled back the curtain on a massive update for Marvel Rivals, with Season 9 promising to fundamentally shift how the game plays. Set to launch on July 10, the update includes a long-awaited rework for Black Widow, a complete overhaul of the Team-Up system, and the introduction of regenerative shields for specific heroes.

Black Widow’s Sniper Rework

Black Widow has been a primary target for community feedback for months, and her upcoming changes aim to refine her identity as a sniper while improving her utility. The most significant shift is the removal of Aim Down Sights (ADS) from her normal attack, which will now fire much faster but lose its one-shot capability.

Instead, her ADS functionality is moving to her Ultimate ability. While the old Electro-Plasma Explosion is being relegated to a standard ability, the new Ultimate allows her to fire a series of piercing shots while in ADS. While these shots cannot one-shot targets, they feature a wider hitbox to ensure more consistent damage output. To help her survive at closer ranges, she is also gaining a new AoE ground-slam ability, designed to better integrate with her melee combos.

Team-Up System Overhaul

Perhaps the most impactful change arriving in Season 9 is the total reconstruction of Team-Up abilities. NetEase is moving away from the previous anchor and flat stat-buff model, replacing it with a more flexible loadout system. Every hero now possesses two distinct Team-Up abilities that players can swap between at any time.

Each of these abilities offers two effects: a base effect and an enhanced effect. The base effect remains active at all times, regardless of your team composition. However, if you have the corresponding partner hero on your roster, the enhanced effect activates, providing significant power boosts. This change is designed to add depth to various roles, including giving Duelists access to healing capabilities and providing Strategists with improved baseline healing.

Regenerative Shields and New Content

Systemic changes continue with the introduction of regenerative shields. This mechanic grants a portion of a hero's health pool the ability to regenerate if they avoid taking damage for five seconds. Not every character will receive this; the feature is specifically targeting high-mobility heroes, such as Psylocke, with the amount of shielded health varying based on the hero.

Beyond these mechanical shifts, Season 9 will introduce Jubilee as a new Strategist on the roster. Players can also look forward to a new convoy map, Thebes, which is scheduled to arrive shortly after the season launch on July 23. With these extensive balance changes and the new Team-Up loadouts, NetEase is positioning Season 9 as a major evolution for the title, effectively acting as a Marvel Rivals 1.5 update.
