- Sony Physical Media Policy: Disc production for new games ends January 2028
The launch of Teeto, a 3D platformer from New Zealand-based developer Eat Pant Games, was intended to be a milestone for the two-person studio. Instead, the team found themselves at the center of a protest directed at Sony’s recent policy changes regarding physical media.
Following the game's release on July 15, 2026, the official launch trailer posted to PlayStation’s YouTube channel was flooded with hundreds of comments demanding the cancellation of the digital-only release. Critics of Sony’s decision to move away from physical discs used the trailer’s comment section as a platform to voice their frustrations, with some users directly pressuring the developers to cancel the digital version and pivot to a physical-only release.
The Developer Response
Eat Pant Games addressed the backlash on social media, clarifying that the studio consists of only two people and that producing physical copies is a significant financial risk. The developers stated they support physical ownership and hope to offer a physical version in the future, but they must first determine the success of the digital release.
The studio also addressed claims that they were complicit in the industry's shift away from physical media. According to the team, the PS5 port of Teeto was already nearing completion when Sony announced its plans to phase out physical discs by January 2028. Consequently, canceling the digital release would only negatively impact the developers and the players who had been anticipating the PlayStation version.
Broader Industry Context
The harassment faced by the Teeto team follows Sony’s July 1, 2026, announcement that it will stop producing physical discs for all new PlayStation titles beginning in 2028. The company cited shifting consumer preferences as the primary driver for the decision. While the policy does not affect games released or scheduled for physical editions before the 2028 cutoff, it has triggered widespread criticism across official PlayStation social channels.
Despite the negative comments on the trailer, Teeto has received positive reception from its early players, earning 100% positive reviews from its first 25 users on Steam. The game is currently available digitally across PS5, Steam, Nintendo Switch, and Switch 2.
