Games Done Quick (GDQ) has canceled a sponsored speedrunning showcase featuring SNK, ending the broadcast less than three hours after it went live on July 12. The organization made the decision following intense community backlash regarding the publisher's ties to Saudi Arabia.
The Cancellation Details
The partnership was intended to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Metal Slug franchise. However, shortly after the stream began on Twitch, viewers raised concerns about whether the sponsorship aligned with GDQ’s stated values regarding inclusivity and human rights, specifically citing SNK’s corporate ownership.
GDQ confirmed the cancellation two hours and 43 minutes into the broadcast. In an official statement, the organization announced it would not accept the sponsorship funds and will not work with SNK in the future. The group also apologized to the runners and the host involved in the showcase, noting that they had no role in the decision to arrange the sponsorship.
Reviewing Future Partnerships
GDQ admitted the partnership was an oversight, stating that they failed to conduct a proper investigation into the company before moving forward. The organization has committed to strengthening its review process for future sponsors, specifically promising closer scrutiny of corporate ownership structures to ensure they align with the organization's values.
Corporate Ties and Industry Context
SNK, which developed titles such as Metal Slug, Fatal Fury, and The King of Fighters, has been wholly owned by the Electronic Gaming Development Company (EGDC) since 2022. EGDC is owned by the Mohammed bin Salman Foundation, a nonprofit organization chaired by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
This incident follows a broader increase in Saudi Arabian involvement in the gaming industry, including the launch of the Esports World Cup and the acquisition of EVO. While some organizations have sought to navigate these partnerships through charitable donations, such as Team Liquid's $50,000 contribution to the LGBTQ+ charity Rainbow Railroad in response to participation in the Riyadh Masters, GDQ opted for a full cancellation of the partnership.
