Campaign Story and Settings
The campaign in *Modern Warfare 4* takes the series to a darker setting centered on the Korean Peninsula, where North Korea launches a full-scale invasion. Captain Price returns as an outlaw following the events of *MW3*, navigating the shadows and heading toward a conflict with Ghost. Valeria also returns, now appearing as an ally to Price.
Campaign locations span trench warfare in Korea, close-quarters combat in New York, chases through Paris, night raids in Mumbai, and city-wide assaults.
Gunplay, Movement, and Loadouts
Gunplay updates remove bloom to make hipfire shots feel more direct and predictable. Recoil, convergence, and weapon handling have been rebuilt, while Depth of Field and VFX adjustments aim to improve enemy visibility.
Movement shifts away from omnimovement, focusing instead on expanded options for mantling, climbing, hanging, and jumping. New mechanics include sliding over cars, sliding to ADS, climbing up pipes, and sprint and mantle assist, alongside the return of tactical sprint and slide cancelling.
The Create-a-Class system unifies Operators, weapons, equipment, and killstreaks into a single loadout. Gunsmith adds automated weapon build generation based on playstyle, and introduces Apex Attachments that unlock after fully progressing a weapon. Prestige makes a return with two distinct paths: Classic Prestige, which resets class progression for increased XP and exclusive rewards, and Regular Prestige, which resets to level one without locking class content.
Multiplayer Maps and Kill Block
At launch, the game features 12 core multiplayer maps, including Transit 213 (the new Shipment), alongside additional maps built for Gunfight and Ground War.
A new addition is Kill Block, a dynamic map that reconfigures its space every round with more than 500 distinct configurations. Made up of three sections roughly the size of 2v2 maps—some incorporating pieces of existing *Call of Duty* maps—the total layout is equal to Shoothouse and supports dynamic weather like rain or snow. Kill Block supports 3v3 and 10v10 Gunfight formats at launch.
DMZ Extraction Mode Returns
The DMZ extraction mode returns to the *Modern Warfare* series, set in the Exclusion Zone Hajin. It combines story missions, dynamic weather, player-driven encounters, and match progression. Story missions continue the narrative following the campaign for solo players and squads.
Dynamic operations generate randomized objectives per match, such as neutralizing weapons programs, securing assets, rescue operations, and assaults. Players can also free-roam to gather resources, open vaults, or hunt other players. Engaging in PvP increases a player's notoriety, placing a price on their head and making them easier to track. The mode utilizes an operator system with persistent backpacks, loadouts, and a choice of three Trait Trees.
PC Technical Features
On PC, *MW4* includes tailored performance optimizations supporting a wide range of hardware. It features multiple upscaling and frame generation options, including DLSS 4.5, alongside expanded graphics options and competitive settings to prioritize frame rates and responsiveness.
