Kraken Express is officially turning its attention toward the first major expansion for Windrose. Following a successful launch in April that saw the pirate survival game pull in over two million sales, the developer has outlined its initial plans for the upcoming Ashlands update.
While the studio emphasizes that the project is still in its early stages, the primary goal for the Ashlands is to expand the game's narrative. Players can expect the main story and side quests to grow significantly in scope as they hunt for the next of the Obols. According to Kraken Express, these artifacts are hidden among the ruins of a forgotten Spanish colony, where volcanic activity has twisted the landscape and attracted competing factions also in pursuit of the Obol's power.

- Update Focus: Ashlands biome, narrative expansion, and ship gameplay
- Platform: PC
New Biome Mechanics and Ship Gameplay
The Ashlands will introduce a volcanic environment comprised of multiple islands. Beyond the typical additions of new enemies, recipes, and resources, the studio is exploring unique biome mechanics to ensure the region plays differently from existing areas.
Ship gameplay is also receiving a substantial overhaul. Kraken Express is currently reviewing a list of community requests to improve naval combat and AI, including more natural NPC ship behaviors and formation sailing. Furthermore, the team is investigating the addition of at least one new ship class, with the brigantine, fluyt, and galleon all currently in the works. While the developer is aware of player requests for more complex wind simulation, they have clarified that Windrose will remain an adventure-focused title rather than shifting toward hardcore simulation.
Building Improvements and Audio
For players focused on the creative side of the game the update will introduce a variety of new decorations and functional additions to existing building sets. The team plans to address current structural gaps and implement quality-of-life improvements based on community feedback. Additionally, the camp NPC system is slated for expansion, and players can look forward to a significantly expanded selection of sea shanties.
Kraken Express has confirmed that it is still in the process of shaping long-term plans beyond the Ashlands. The developer encourages players to continue sharing suggestions while development progresses and has promised to share a release window as soon as more information becomes available.
