If you were hoping for a direct sequel to the classic podracing titles of the early 2000s, Star Wars: Galactic Racer might surprise you. While the game carries the iconic branding, developer Fuse Games and Lucasfilm Games are taking the experience in a distinctly different direction when the title launches on October 6, 2026.

During a recent hands-on demo at Summer Game Fest, it became clear that the main story mode moves away from the iconic podracers of the films. Instead, players are placed behind the controls of speeder bikes, skim speeders, and landspeeders. While the omission of podracers in the campaign may be a point of friction for fans, the new vehicle types introduce fresh mechanics designed to change how you approach the track.

Roguelike Racing Mechanics

The core of the experience lies in its roguelike structure. Fuse Games founder and CEO Matt Webster explains that the game emphasizes replayability through a massive library of swappable parts. Players can combine these components to create their ideal machine, with Webster noting that there are trillions of potential combinations to discover.

“There are so many parts, and many of them are synergistic with each other,” Webster said. “Because that element’s randomized, you’ve got this decision-making happening that we’ve not seen for a long time in racing games.”

To keep the racing intense, the game introduces a “hot and cold” mechanic tied to the Ramjet ability. Using this aggressive boost system generates significant heat; if a player holds the boost for too long, their vehicle risks overheating or blowing up. This adds a layer of risk-reward management that forces players to balance speed against the physical limitations of their custom-built machines.

Where Do Podracers Fit In?

While the main story focuses on speeders, those looking for the nostalgic thrill of the Boonta Eve Classic haven't been entirely ignored. The developers have included an Arcade mode and specific race replays that allow players to jump into classic podracers. However, the experience of piloting these machines is distinct from the primary campaign, offering a different, high-speed challenge that emphasizes the difficulty of maneuvering in tight canyon environments.
