For years, collectors have faced an uphill battle just to purchase the latest Pokemon Trading Card Game products. With stock frequently vanishing into the hands of scalpers, Nintendo has officially stepped in to address the issue. During a recent Q&A session at its 86th annual investors' meeting, Nintendo confirmed it is now in active communication with The Pokemon Company to help restore balance to the market.
While Nintendo typically remains hands-off regarding the management of the Pokemon franchise, the scale of current scalping issues has forced a change in approach. Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa addressed the matter directly when asked about the company's stance on creating a stable environment for customers to buy and play the game.
"We are aware that there are instances of speculative buying up of limited-quantity cards for the Pokemon Trading Card Game which is developed by The Pokemon Company, an equity-method affiliate of our company," Furukawa stated. "We are also communicating with The Pokemon Company as needed to discuss measures to ensure that products are delivered to our customers properly."
New Measures Against Scalping
The Pokemon Company has already begun testing various methods to combat the trend of speculative buying. These efforts include:
- Implementing a digital queuing system on The Pokemon Center website.
- Offering made-to-order sales to increase accessibility.
- Concluding agreements with various marketplace operators to monitor listings.
- Plans to utilize My Number card authentication for online priority lottery sales.
Independent retailers have also experimented with their own deterrents, including the intentional damaging of product packaging to lower the resale value for scalpers, though the problem remains widespread. Despite these ongoing efforts, the demand for TCG products continues to outpace supply, making it difficult for genuine collectors to secure sets without navigating secondary markets or private Discord servers.
The timing of Nintendo’s intervention follows the recent announcement of the 30th Anniversary Expansion lineup. Given the anticipated demand for this milestone release, the collaborative effort between Nintendo and The Pokemon Company aims to ensure that future product drops are handled with better oversight. While the intervention may come too late to fully mitigate the fervor surrounding the 30th-anniversary launch, the commitment from Nintendo marks a significant acknowledgment of the state of the hobby.
