Since its release on the Switch 2, Mario Kart World has moved 14.7 million copies in just nine months. Despite this immense success, Nintendo has been surprisingly quiet regarding new content. However, the latest version 1.7.0 update, released on June 30, 2026, finally introduces the first new additions to the Knockout Tour while subtly changing how the game’s notorious item distribution works.

First-Place Item Balancing

The most significant, albeit unlisted, change in the version 1.7.0 patch involves item acquisition. Historically, the Mario Kart series has penalized the leader by restricting their item box potential to coins or bananas, making it difficult to defend against the powerful items granted to players in the back of the pack. Now, for the first 20 seconds of every race, players in first place have a chance to pull more effective items, such as Triple Mushrooms or the invincibility-granting Boo.

This adjustment changes the early-game flow, allowing those who secure a strong start to hold their position more effectively rather than being immediately swarmed. The effect is temporary, however; after the initial 20-second window, item distribution reverts to its standard, more punishing state, leaving the leader vulnerable to Lightning, Bullet Bills, and Blooper ink.

New Knockout Tour Routes and General Tweaks

After a year of waiting, players finally have new paths to explore. The update adds two specific rally routes for the Knockout Tour:

  • Drill Rally: Connects Wario Shipyard to Bowser’s Castle.
  • Boomerang Rally: Runs from Salty Salty Speedway to Whistlestop Summit.

While these additions are welcome, it remains notable that Nintendo has not yet added a traditional quartet of new tracks to the game, a departure from the series' usual cadence of classic track updates. Beyond the new routes, the patch includes several gameplay adjustments. Low-acceleration characters and vehicles have received a performance boost, and gliding speeds have been increased for specific high-speed characters. Additionally, a new ramp has been placed on the route from Airship Fortress to Bowser’s Castle.

Quality of Life and Fixes

Version 1.7.0 also introduces a few quality-of-life improvements, most notably the ability to add stickers to images in Photo Mode using touch or mouse controls. System-wide, the game now supports the Thai language.

The patch addresses a long list of technical issues, including:

  • Time Trials: Fixed an error where finish times were incorrectly recorded.
  • Bullet Bill: Resolved multiple collision and performance issues associated with the item.
  • Course Geometry: Fixed various "out of bounds" bugs, including slipping through walls in Bowser’s Castle and falling off the course in Dandelion Depths and Koopa Troopa Beach.
  • Mechanics: Players can now hop immediately after being hit by Kamek’s magic or a Bullet Bill, and slipstreams can now be stopped by braking.

Nintendo has stated that more Knockout Tour routes are planned for future updates, though the company has not provided a timeline for when players can expect more substantial track additions.
