Claims circulating over the weekend regarding a massive disparity in GTA 6 pre-orders appear to be holding weight. According to current data from Amazon’s video games department, the PlayStation 5 version of the upcoming Rockstar Games title is significantly outperforming its Xbox Series X counterpart.

As of this week, the PS5 edition of Grand Theft Auto VI sits at number 13 on Amazon’s video game best-sellers list. The title has remained a consistent fixture in the top 20 since pre-orders opened one week ago, even reaching as high as fourth place yesterday. This level of demand is notable, as it follows the initial rush of day-one purchases.

The Xbox Sales Gap

In contrast, the Xbox version of the game is notably absent from the top 100 list entirely. It is important to clarify that this chart tracks all video game-related items, including accessories, consoles, and gift cards. Even with that broad scope, the lack of a presence for the Xbox edition of one of the year's most anticipated releases is striking.

To provide a sense of scale, the Xbox version is currently being outsold on the platform by a variety of items, including Kirby Air Riders, Just Dance 2026, Lost Soul Aside, and standard DualSense controllers.

Marketing and Platform Preference

The discrepancy in sales may be influenced by recent marketing efforts. PlayStation has heavily emphasized that GTA 6 "plays best on PS5," a slogan currently featured on the official Rockstar Games website. For a massive audience that has waited years for this release, such messaging may be driving consumers toward the Sony ecosystem when choosing where to play.

Adding to the challenges for the physical market, some retailers are pushing back against the format entirely. For instance, North American retailer VGP has confirmed it is refusing to stock physical versions of GTA 6 due to company policy regarding the "code in a box" format, which lacks a physical disc.

While Rockstar has not released official total sales figures, the current Amazon rankings add significant weight to reports that the PS5 version is outselling the Xbox version at a rate of roughly eight-to-one. With the game’s release set for November 19, 2026, it remains to be seen if the Xbox version will gain traction in the coming months.
