The Chain Spear: A New Layer of Combat
The centerpiece of Revelations is the Chain Spear, a versatile weapon that replaces the Slayer's shield in his left hand. According to Game Director and id Software Studio Co-Director Hugo Martin, players will eventually be able to swap between the shield and the spear freely, though the DLC begins by forcing the use of the new tool to help players master its depth.
The Chain Spear is designed to bring back kinetic movement options, acting as both an offensive tool and a mobility aid. It features a wide variety of attack modes, including:
- Stabbing and Slashing: Capable of breaking armor and killing fodder for resources.
- Ranged Attacks: Can be thrown like a sniper shot.
- Slam Attacks: Similar to the hammer found in DOOM Eternal.
- Parrying: Used to counter incoming melee and projectile attacks.
Beyond its offensive capabilities, the spear can be fired as a grappling hook to pull the Slayer toward enemies or navigate the environment. Martin noted that the spear allows for an "Orbit" mechanic, where the player can rotate around airborne enemies while firing their right-hand weapon, a system he compared to Z-targeting.
Campaign and Endgame Content
Martin described the DLC as larger than the combined expansions for DOOM Eternal. The content is split into 60% story campaign and 40% endgame challenges. The campaign features Metroidvania-style exploration within a hub area, including modernized versions of classic levels from the original DOOM games.
The endgame focuses on replaying campaign levels with added puzzles and challenges, culminating in an "uber boss" and master arenas designed to test a player's mastery of both the shield and the Chain Spear. All existing difficulty sliders remain available, ensuring the content is accessible to all skill levels. Revelations supports Xbox Play Anywhere, allowing for seamless progression between console and PC.
