Destiny 2 players will have to wait a little longer for the game's next update. Shortly after news broke regarding significant downsizing at Bungie, the developer announced via Twitter that the patch originally scheduled for this week has been delayed. While the studio has yet to provide a new release date, they have confirmed that the update is not canceled indefinitely.

The delay comes during a turbulent period for the studio. Following the release of Marathon which has not achieved the commercial success required to surpass the long-running popularity of Destiny 2 Bungie has implemented mass layoffs affecting the majority of the Destiny 2 team and portions of the Marathon crew. The studio recently acknowledged that the MMO has “fell short of expectations these past several years.”

Addressing the Future of Destiny 2 Support

In response to community concerns on Reddit regarding the indefinite nature of the delay, the official Destiny 2 Team account clarified that the team is still working to push the patch out. “Not a forever delay. We will get this out when possible,” the studio stated. They noted that a handful of the fixes contained within the delayed patch were the work of team members who were recently laid off, adding, “When this ships, please show love to the team, past and present.”

Despite the studio ending active development for Destiny 2 last month, the game experienced a notable surge in players, with many flocking to the servers as the title moves into its final phase. This increase in activity has highlighted ongoing performance and bug issues, which the remaining skeleton crew at Bungie is now working to address.

Community Feedback and Performance Issues

Bungie has asked players for patience as they navigate these staffing changes. In a separate discussion regarding persistent PC performance issues, the studio requested that players provide specific videos or examples of the problems they are encountering. While they stopped short of guaranteeing immediate resolutions, the team stated, “While we can't promise a fix, we'll see what we can do.”

As the industry faces widespread studio closures and project cancelations throughout July 2026, Bungie’s struggle to maintain its live-service titles reflects a broader climate of instability. For now, the remaining staff at the studio is scrambling to maintain a cadence of updates for Destiny 2 while balancing the reality of a significantly reduced workforce.
