Three years after its initial launch, Street Fighter 6 remains a staple of the competitive scene, recently drawing over 2,000 entrants to Evo 2026. During the event, Director Takayuki Nakayama and Producer Shuhei Matsumoto sat down to discuss the game's evolution, the upcoming fourth character pass, and the reality behind its long-term support.

Clarifying the 10-Year Plan

Addressing common misconceptions regarding the game’s longevity, Producer Shuhei Matsumoto sought to clarify the team's goals. While fans have often discussed a "10-year plan," Matsumoto explained that this is an internal mindset rather than a rigid, confirmed roadmap. The team is operating with the goal of expanding and maintaining the game for up to a decade, but there is no formal confirmation that the project is locked into a 10-year development cycle.

Regarding the future of single-player content, Nakayama noted that while World Tour updates have ceased, the team is looking into other ways to accommodate the needs of newer players, though specific plans remain under wraps.

DLC and Character Development

The upcoming fourth character pass is set to introduce several fresh faces, including the fighting game debut of Tifa from Final Fantasy VII, as well as Arjun, Bosch, and Yasmine. Nakayama confirmed that these new additions will feature unique playstyles distinct from the existing roster:

  • Arjun: Will incorporate a dancing element into his combat style.
  • Tifa: Will utilize a Materia-based mechanic that translates the Final Fantasy VII experience into the Street Fighter 6 engine.
  • Bosch: Despite his appearance in World Tour as one of Luke’s disciples, his playable version will feature a completely different, unique fighting style.

When asked if freeing up resources from World Tour development would increase the frequency of DLC, Nakayama explained that the skill sets required for single-player content do not necessarily transfer to the creation of new playable fighters. However, the team remains committed to releasing new costumes for existing characters, aiming to maintain a consistent, high-quality benchmark for all outfits.

The Inclusion of Yasmine

A major focus of the current roster expansion is Yasmine, the first Filipino character in Street Fighter history. Nakayama shared that the character’s creation was driven by a desire to provide representation for the Filipino community within the FGC. To ensure authenticity, the team conducted extensive research, consulted with professional martial artists for motion capture, and spoke with Filipino staff members about their culture and the importance of family.

Visual details in Yasmine’s design, such as her hairstyle, have sparked community theories, which Nakayama noted the team actively tracks. He added that Yasmine required more design iterations than other characters, like Arjun, as the team aimed to make her feel like a protagonist-level character.

System Mechanics and Feedback

Despite player discussions in the West regarding the Drive System—particularly Drive Rush—Nakayama stated there are no plans to implement major changes to the game's core mechanics. The team relies on a dedicated Battle team to analyze player feedback from social media and surveys, alongside data from both professional and casual tournaments, to determine if any balance adjustments are necessary.
