With the Grand Theft Auto 6 release date set for November 19, 2026, Rockstar Games is facing internal pressure that could impact the lead-up to its highly anticipated launch. Employees across the company are currently pushing for official union recognition, and they have not ruled out a strike if management does not voluntarily recognize the union before the autumn.
Production on the title remains in full swing for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X, despite ongoing reports of crunch conditions within the studio. The current movement for unionization follows a turbulent period for the developer, specifically the mass firing of 31 employees in October 2025.
The Conflict Over Firings
The October 2025 dismissals serve as a catalyst for the current negotiations. While Rockstar Games maintains that those terminations were related to the unauthorized sharing of confidential information in a public forum, the affected employees dispute this reasoning. Former staff members, including Jordan Garland, have characterized the layoffs as union-busting, noting that every individual let go was a union member at the time. Rockstar has denied these claims, labeling the accusations as "entirely false and misleading."
Garland, speaking on the goals of the current effort, stated that employees are working to "ensure this sort of thing never happens again, not just at Rockstar but anywhere in the industry." He is calling on the company to voluntarily recognize the union and engage in a dialogue that makes the development process a "celebration of people who make the games possible."
Seeking Collective Bargaining
Shanti Easton-Steel, a Production Coordinator at Rockstar North in Edinburgh, highlighted the resolve of the current staff. She noted that the team is now in a position to pursue formal recognition, acknowledging the contributions of the colleagues who were let go last year. "The best way we can honor their contribution now is by succeeding in the fight they helped us to start," Easton-Steel said.
The union's primary objectives include securing formal channels for collective bargaining with management and establishing stronger workplace rights and protections for all staff. With just over four months remaining until the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI, the union is prepared to escalate to strike action if Rockstar does not meet their demands for voluntary recognition. For now, the company faces a critical decision in the coming weeks as it balances the final stages of production with these growing labor negotiations.
