Path of Exile 2 patch 0.5.3 is live, marking a significant effort from developer Grinding Gear Games to refine the endgame experience. Following the success of the Return of the Ancients league, Game Director Jonathan Rogers stated that the team’s goal for this update is to ensure that all types of content feel rewarding for players to invest in.
Delirium and Simulacrum Adjustments
The most substantial changes arrive for the Delirium mechanic. Previously, the system suffered from scaling issues where high-level "juicing" actually made the league less rewarding. Elites spawned by purple mirror shards were failing to appear as magic or rare monsters, and stacking multiple shards did not increase spawn rates. With the new patch, Delirium will start with half the scaling in early endgame phases, gradually ramping up to break even once three Tablets are utilized.
Simulacrums have also been overhauled. They now scale from 100% to 200% Delirious, and wave modifiers have been removed entirely because they increased difficulty without improving loot. Players can now choose between three mirror shards after each boss room: 'Escalating Threats' adds a modifier, 'Apex Predators' grants an extra boss fight, and 'Pure Emotions' spawns additional monster packs.
Expeditions and Vaal Temple Updates
Grand Expeditions are receiving quality-of-life improvements to address player feedback regarding their slow pace. The explosive count has been cut by 25%, and basic weapon and armor chests have been removed in favor of higher-rarity rewards, including currency, uniques, and Waystones. Additionally, the effect of monster modifiers on rarity and rewards from Runes of Aldur Remnants has been significantly increased.
The Temple of Atzoatl is also seeing a shift in focus. The passive that granted Temple rewards in other areas has been removed. It is replaced by a mechanic tied to Vaal Beacons, which will corrupt nearby rare or unique monsters to create unpredictable, high-risk encounters. According to Rogers, this change is intended to lean into the thematic roots of corruption and risk associated with the Vaal.
Additional Balance and Technical Fixes
Beyond specific league mechanics, the patch addresses late-game Runeforging. Players had found that the trade-off for Runic Ward often felt unappealing due to the loss of base stats. Patch 0.5.3 ensures that this conversion now leaves players with a higher retention of original Armor, Energy Shield, and Evasion.
Other updates include larger Breach strongholds across the Atlas and improved rewards for Abyss boss fights, including the Vessel of Kulemak. GGG confirmed that further refinements for these systems are planned for future updates. Finally, the patch includes a suite of bug fixes and stability improvements, alongside a new feature for the build planner that allows links to generate a button for associated guides, provided the domain is whitelisted.
