Hideo Kojima’s next project, OD, continues to cultivate a deeply unsettling atmosphere. A new image recently revealed in an Entertainment Weekly cover story offers a fresh look at the game's photorealistic horror, featuring a mysterious, possibly antagonistic figure lingering in a dark hallway.

Upon closer inspection, the figure appears to be actress Hunter Schafer. Her presence in the image—clad in a red outfit and sporting horns—suggests she may play a significant role as a villain or a central cult figure. She joins a confirmed cast that includes Sophia Lillis and Udo Kier.

A New Kind of Horror System

Kojima is aiming for a specific brand of terror with OD. The designer, who previously pitched the concept to multiple companies before finding a home with Xbox and Phil Spencer, is keeping the core mechanics under wraps. However, he has indicated that the game will feature a unique system designed to keep players engaged, even when the experience becomes overwhelming.

"I wanted to go beyond the limit of the ‘scariness’ that other games had reached," Kojima told Entertainment Weekly. "It’s a single-player game, and I wanted to make it as scary as possible. But for those that might stop playing when it gets too scary, I have thought of a system that will allow them to keep going."

Kojima has described OD as a project he has been developing since his work on Death Stranding. He maintains that it is a title unlike anything else in the current gaming news landscape, promising a "new game system" that has never been seen before.

The Shadow of P.T.

The visual style of OD has drawn immediate comparisons to P.T., the famous playable teaser for the cancelled Silent Hills project. That project, which was also set to feature Norman Reedus and director Guillermo Del Toro, became a cult classic for its claustrophobic, photorealistic hallway horror. OD seems to be picking up that mantle, with reports noting that Kojima is utilizing advanced scanning technology to bring real-world environments into the game.

Following the development of OD at Kojima Productions, the director is expected to shift his focus to PHYSINT, an upcoming stealth-action title intended to return to the roots of the genre.
