Lenovo is pointing toward a "new normal" that could persist from 2030 onwards, and even then, prices are expected to remain elevated compared to the 2024 and 2025 windows.

The root of the issue is the massive surge in demand for AI data centers, which is currently consuming memory production capacity at an unprecedented rate. Even though manufacturers like Samsung and SK Hynix are rushing to bring new manufacturing plants online, Lenovo believes the underlying demand is so high that it will prevent a significant price correction.

In some cases, manufacturers were selling modules at a loss, leading to scenarios where 32GB of DDR5 RAM could be picked up for as little as $70. Today, that same capacity often commands prices closer to $400. While industry analysts argue that the previous sub-$100 price points were unsustainable for manufacturers, the current leap in costs is far beyond what most consumers would consider a reasonable market correction.

For those currently shopping for gaming hardware, Lenovo suggests a shift in strategy. The company advises that users should carefully evaluate their actual requirements rather than over-provisioning their systems.

Gaming Advice in a High-Cost Market

If you are building or upgrading a PC, the advice is to scrutinize your memory needs. While it has been common practice in recent years to recommend 32GB of RAM to provide a comfortable buffer, 16GB remains perfectly capable of handling modern games at maximum settings.

The trade-off is strictly operational: if you stick with 16GB, you will need to be more disciplined about your background tasks. You’ll likely need to close browser tabs or other resource-heavy applications while gaming to avoid hitting memory limits. However, if your workflow includes streaming, recording gameplay, video editing, or heavy multitasking, the investment in 32GB or more may still be a necessary cost of doing business in the current market.
