The Death Stranding movie, which was first announced back in 2022, is taking a different path than many might expect. Director Michael Sarnoski, known for his work on A Quiet Place: Day One, recently shared that the upcoming film will not be a direct adaptation of the 2019 PlayStation and PC hit.
Speaking with IGN, Sarnoski provided an update on the project’s progress. Currently in the script-writing phase, the director emphasized that he is crafting a unique narrative within the game's universe. "It's a story with my own characters and my own corner of the world," Sarnoski said. "I want to explore something that's meaningful to me."

A New Perspective on the World
While the film aims to carve out its own identity away from Sam Porter Bridges' original journey across North America, fans of the source material shouldn't expect a total departure. Sarnoski hinted that he may include cameos from familiar faces, keeping the door open for fan-favorite elements to appear.
Production company A24 appears confident in this direction. According to Sarnoski, the team has already reviewed an initial draft and is actively working through revisions together. Hideo Kojima, the creator of the original Death Stranding, has also been involved in the process. Sarnoski noted that Kojima’s deep knowledge of cinema made the collaboration particularly notable, recalling how Kojima instantly identified specific film references within the script, such as Come and See.
A24’s Growing Gaming Slate
The Death Stranding project is just one piece of A24’s expanding interest in gaming news and adaptations. The studio is currently filming an Elden Ring movie directed by Alex Garland, which is slated for a 2028 release. Set photos for that production have already surfaced online, featuring locations like Conwy Castle in North Wales, which is reportedly standing in for the game's Stormveil Castle.
As for Death Stranding, Sarnoski is nearing the end of the script phase. With A24’s backing and Kojima’s seal of approval, the film is moving forward as a distinct vision rather than a scene-for-scene recreation of the original delivery simulator.
