Microsoft's Xbox Series X|S saw a massive 86 percent surge in hardware sales during June 2026 compared to the same period last year, marking the platform's best month of the year so far. According to market data shared by Circana's Mat Piscatella, the sudden spike comes immediately ahead of a second major console price increase scheduled to take effect on August 1, 2026.

Quick Facts

  • Xbox Series X|S console sales jumped 86% year-over-year in June 2026.
  • The upcoming price increase for Xbox hardware goes into effect on August 1, 2026.
  • Microsoft has discontinued the 2TB Xbox Series X model ahead of the price hike.
  • The last Xbox Series price hike occurred in May 2025.
  • Hardware purchases were also buoyed by the release of Playground Games' Forza Horizon 6.

Why Xbox Hardware Sales Jumped in June 2026

The primary driver behind June's hardware rush is the imminent MSRP price hike announced at the end of June. With prices set to climb on August 1, consumers who were previously on the fence opted to purchase hardware before the markup takes effect. The previous price hike hit in May 2025, which suppressed sales in June 2025. That lower baseline, paired with buyers actively dodging the upcoming price rise, created the 86 percent year-over-year increase.

The price increase is sizable enough that Microsoft opted to straight-up discontinue the 2TB model of the Xbox Series X console. Asha Sharma noted that the higher-tier SKU would simply end up too expensive for buyers once the new pricing structure is applied.

Game Releases and Upcoming Blockbusters

Software releases also played a role in pushing hardware off store shelves in June. Playground Games recently launched Forza Horizon 6, which has established itself as Xbox's leading flagship franchise for 2026 while older pillars like Halo and Gears of War occupy different positions than in past generations.

Additionally, anticipation for GTA 6 ahead of its November release appears to be prompting hardware pickups. Although Rockstar has stated that GTA 6 plays best on PS5 and PS5 Pro, the title remains available on Xbox Series X|S, leading some buyers to secure hardware early alongside their game pre-orders.

Price and Availability Before the August 1 Hike

For players considering picking up an Xbox Series console, current standard MSRP pricing remains locked in only through July 31, 2026. When the hardware originally launched on November 10, 2020, the flagship Xbox Series X carried an opening MSRP of $499, backed by a custom AMD 8-core Zen 2 processor targeting 720p to 4K UHD resolutions.

Because the 2TB Xbox Series X model is officially discontinued, remaining store stock represents the final retail inventory for that specific configuration. Standard Series X and Series S models remain available, but current prices will only last until August 1.
