Serious Sam: Shatterverse Unveiled
Behaviour Interactive has announced Serious Sam: Shatterversea new entry in the iconic first-person shooter series, developed in partnership with Devolver Digital. The game is designed to celebrate the franchise's upcoming 25th anniversary by blending the high-octane action and massive enemy waves of the original titles with a modern roguelike structure.
The development team at Behaviour Interactive expressed their excitement for the project, drawing inspiration primarily from Serious Sam: The First Encounter and The Second Encounter. Their goal was to recreate the signature feel of Serious Sam, including its distinctive gunplay and classic enemies, while modernizing these elements within Unreal Engine. A key design objective was to capture the replayability and unpredictable nature of the early games, leading to the adoption of the FPS roguelike genre.
Shatterverse introduces a multiverse narrative where multiple versions of Serious Sam must unite to combat Uber Mental's forces across fractured realities. Players will confront Mental's five lieutenants, each serving as a major boss encounter. The gameplay emphasizes relentless destruction, offering a diverse arsenal of both classic and new weapons, alongside powerful boons and run modifiers that dynamically reshape each playthrough. In true roguelite fashion, death is not a final setback but an opportunity to discover new strategies and possibilities.
Accessibility was a core focus for Behaviour Interactive, aiming to make Shatterverse enjoyable for players new to the franchise, FPS games, or roguelikes. Every system is designed to be easy to grasp while still offering depth for mastery. The game launches as a complete, standalone experience, priced at $19.99, with an initial promotional price of $17.99. It is built to support future expansions and downloadable content, allowing the base experience to grow without requiring live-service elements to be fun.
To ensure long-term playability, Serious Sam: Shatterverse features peer-to-peer multiplayer, allowing friends and family to continue playing together for years without reliance on dedicated servers. An offline solo mode is also included, guaranteeing the game remains accessible even decades after its release. Beta playtests have reportedly received positive community feedback, with the development team actively incorporating player input to refine the experience.
Ultimately, Shatterverse seeks to welcome newcomers to the Serious Sam universe and encourage them to explore the earlier titles, while providing veteran fans with a fresh, shareable take on the beloved series.
