Following a successful run on PC with mostly positive reception, Hell Clock has officially arrived on consoles. Developer Rogue Snail and publisher Mad Mushroom have brought the fast-paced roguelike action RPG to Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, marking the title's first appearance on home hardware.

A Brazilian-Inspired Roguelike

While many action RPGs lean on traditional fantasy tropes, Hell Clock finds its footing in a specific historical conflict. The story draws inspiration from the War of Canudos, a 19th-century conflict in Brazil. Players control Pajeú, a warrior navigating a surreal and dangerous version of Purgatory and Hell to save the soul of his fallen mentor.

This historical backdrop influences more than just the art style; it frames the player's progression through a mix of folklore and fantasy. As a roguelike, the game emphasizes repeated runs where players collect Relics, unlock Blessings, and craft character builds to survive increasingly difficult waves of enemies.

Managing the Clock

The core gameplay loop centers on a literal ticking clock. Players must balance the desire for better loot and deeper exploration against the pressure of a time limit. For those who find the default pace too stressful, the game includes a 'Relaxed Mode' that removes the timer, while a 'Hardcore' mode is available for those seeking a more punishing experience.

Combat flexibility is a major component of the design. Whether utilizing rapid knife strikes, heavy environmental weapons like a giant bell, or ranged attacks, the game encourages players to experiment with different combinations to suit their playstyle.

Day One Expansion

Console players are not just receiving the base game. The Cursed War expansion launches simultaneously on Xbox and PlayStation, providing a brand-new story act. This expansion introduces additional environments, tougher bosses, and new skills, alongside expanded endgame systems intended to extend the longevity of the experience.

Hell Clock is available now for £20.99. While it is available on the Xbox Store, it is not currently part of the Xbox Game Pass library.
