Following the gameplay reveal at the Xbox Games Showcase, The Coalition has provided a detailed look at Gears of War: E-Day. Set to launch in 2026 for Xbox Series X and PC, the title serves as a prequel that explores the exact moment the Locust Horde emerged on Sera.
Quick Facts
- Development Timeline: Production on E-Day began following the release of Gears 5 and Gears Tactics.
- Setting: The game takes place in the city of Kalona, a location built entirely in Unreal Engine 5 to allow for "micro-destruction" and a living, breathing city environment.
- New Mechanics: The game features a new slide mechanic, an updated Active Reload system that now appears in the center of the screen, and single-shell weapon loading.
- Squad Composition: The story follows Bravo Squad, featuring Marcus Fenix, Dominic Santiago, Megs Carter, and Lucas Reyes.
A City Under Siege
Unlike previous entries in the franchise, which typically feature the ruins of a war-torn world, Gears of War: E-Day focuses on a city that is still intact at the start of the invasion. Developer Matt Searcy noted that the team focused on creating a "living, breathing city" that players see being destroyed in real-time. The visual inspiration for Kalona draws from 1970s-era New York, intended to lend the world a sense of nostalgia before the Locust threat arrives.
The environment is designed to serve as a primary gameplay element. Players will encounter varied cover types beyond the traditional waist-high barriers, including vehicles, planters, and debris from the collapsing architecture. The development team emphasized that the city acts as a character, with players revisiting areas they previously saw intact, now reduced to smoking ruins.
Updated Movement and Combat
While the team aims to preserve the "heaviness" associated with the series, E-Day introduces more fluid movement options. The addition of a slide mechanic allows players to transition into cover more dynamically, slide under trucks, and navigate through tight spaces. The camera has also been adjusted during sprinting to provide better visibility.
The combat systems have been refined to increase immersion. The Active Reload interface has been moved to the center of the screen, aligned with the player's aim, to ensure it remains a part of the core combat experience. Additionally, certain weapons now support single-shell loading, allowing players to interrupt the reload animation to fire a round in emergency situations.
Visual and Narrative Details
The game implements new technology to track environmental interactions on character models. Players will see blood and dirt accumulate on characters as they fight, a visual feedback system that changes throughout the campaign. This is complemented by a consistent color language; for instance, red lighting is used specifically to signal the presence of Emergence Holes or immediate danger.
Regarding the Locust, the team is using this prequel setting to reintroduce the enemies as a fresh threat. In the early stages of the game, players encounter Wretches that lack armor, depicted more as "attack dogs" for the advancing Locust forces, rather than the armored units seen in later chronological installments.
