When you think about simulator games, you usually picture jobs far removed from your daily life—truck driving or train operating. But Drug Dealer Simulator 2 asks a different question: have you ever wanted to build a criminal empire from scratch? While the premise sounds like a compelling rags-to-riches story, the execution on Xbox Series X leaves us with a mixed result, earning a 3/5 rating.

Building a Business on Isla Sombra

The game drops you into the shoes of Eddie, a nobody arriving on the fictional Caribbean island of Isla Sombra. The narrative isn't reaching for the heights of Breaking Bad or The Wire; instead, it relies on a "you are the story" framework. You’ll meet various characters and factions that provide plot twists, though the delivery feels distinctly old-fashioned, reminiscent of titles from the early 2000s.

The core gameplay loop is where the title finds its footing. You start by traveling to a hideout, gathering resources, mixing products, and packaging them for delivery. As your bank account grows, you can purchase better equipment and furnish your hideout to look more professional. You must balance your income, ensuring you have enough capital for essential materials like water, fertilizer, and chemicals.

The Grind vs. The Management

As you expand, the game introduces more complexity. Clients demand different types of drugs, forcing you to source a wider variety of ingredients. Eventually, you can acquire multiple properties, turn them into dens, and even hire others to handle manufacturing and dealing while you focus on rival gangs and the military. The management side of the game is genuinely solid, and I enjoyed the balancing act required to keep the operation running.

However, the fun factor is inconsistent. I found the controls to be awkward, and traveling across the island eventually becomes a chore. Visually, the game feels like it belongs to the Xbox 360 or Xbox One era rather than the Series X. While the sandbox is large and varied, the character models are stiff, and the audio is basic at best.

Verdict

Ultimately, Drug Dealer Simulator 2 is an interesting trip that begins with a fun "zero-to-hero" progression but eventually suffers from a repetitive gameplay loop. If you have a friend to join you in co-op, the experience is certainly more enjoyable, but solo players may find the frustration of the controls and the dated presentation difficult to overlook.
