The development of The Elder Scrolls 6 is currently facing internal uncertainty following a massive restructuring at Xbox this past July. While a report from early July suggested the highly anticipated RPG was at least two years away from completion, employees now fear that recent staffing cuts have jeopardized that timeline.

Bethesda Softworks, like many other Xbox studios, saw significant layoffs during the July restructuring. While the impact was most concentrated on teams supporting The Elder Scrolls Online and Fallout 76, members of The Elder Scrolls 6 development team were also let go. The situation has severely impacted office morale; management reportedly removed displays of gratitude that staff had placed in common areas to honor their laid-off colleagues.

Concerns Over Development and Institutional Knowledge

The core team at Bethesda Game Studios has historically maintained a smaller footprint compared to other major developers. With the project already facing an extended development cycle, the departure of staff has left the remaining team worried about the future of the game. A primary concern is the loss of institutional knowledge and experience necessary to navigate the studio's proprietary Creation Engine 3—the same toolset utilized for Starfield.

One Bethesda employee speaking anonymously to IGN noted the fear that existing staff might be replaced by cheaper contract labor. The employee explained that because the studio's tools are proprietary, new hires will require extensive onboarding, which could further delay production and force the remaining team into crunch to compensate for lost time.

Quality Assurance and Studio Stability

Xbox is reportedly attempting to mitigate these issues by transferring staff from The Elder Scrolls Online team over to the The Elder Scrolls 6 project. However, reports indicate that the company’s quality assurance department has been "decimated" by the cuts. Given that Bethesda is already known for releasing games with significant technical bugs, there is heightened concern regarding how these departures will impact the final polish of their upcoming title.

The pressure is mounting as Xbox shifts its strategy to prioritize its major gaming brands. With The Elder Scrolls 6 and a reported new Fallout game from Obsidian Entertainment currently in the works, the remaining developers at Bethesda face a challenging road ahead. As of now, the studio has not provided an official release date, leaving both the staff and the public waiting for clarity on the project's status.
