Bringing the Arcade Experience Home
Originally released on the System Super 22 arcade hardware, the game tasks players with guiding a rolled-up armadillo through various stages. In a notable move for preservation, Hamster has confirmed that players can connect select trackball controllers to their consoles to replicate the original arcade control scheme, though the developer has not yet provided a list of specific compatible hardware.
Ryoichi Kaku, a lead at Bandai Namco’s Research Institute, noted the significance of the release: “Being able to release Armadillo Racing as part of the Arcade Archives series for the first time in 30 years is deeply meaningful to me, both as a member of the original arcade game’s development team and as someone who has been involved in bringing it back.”
Gameplay Modes and Features
The port includes several modes standard to the Arcade Archives series, such as Original, High Score, and Caravan. Players on the PS5 will also gain access to a Time Attack mode. Additionally, the game features a secret bowling minigame, which is unlocked by finishing a race in first place.
For those looking to expand their digital library, the PS5 is also seeing the release of The Conveni, a convenience store management simulation originally on the PS1. Note that this title is available in Japanese only.
